“Art – When it is really doing what it should do – teaches abstract thinking; it teaches teamwork; it teaches people to actually think about things that they cannot see.” —Bill T. Jones

Spring is in the air, and the sunshine has been kind to give us a recharge for all kinds of new things growing, and changing. This is the time that we can see the flowers growing, start gardening, wander outside, be in nature more often. We live in a beautiful area, where all of this is at our fingertips. After this spring break, I’ll be starting new after school programs of kids art classes at a few local Bellingham schools, and I’m estatic to be a new guest Teaching Artist at Blaine Elementary to help them create a school-wide art mural! There’s also a variety of great opportunities coming up for you and your families to go see art, fun art events, a call to artists Juried Art Show, and exciting kids summer camps!

We’re happy to announce that this will be our first Pride event for the Sylvia Center! This is our first Sylvia Center Dragtopia & Variety Show for All Ages! The Juried Art Show will feature artists that focus on the inclusion, awareness, support, and acceptance of the LGBTTQQIAAP & Queer community, and can include any of the following with this theme in mind - pride, family, equality, transformation, community, & love. The art show will be held during the Bellingham downtown art walk on July 5th. There’s also a Dragtopia & Variety Show for All Ages – performance on Wednesday, July 10th, 7:30pm with auditions in May, TBD.

This show also promotes art organizations and facilities that incorporate inclusion and community for all genders, race, creed, religion, race, and backgrounds, in their facilities and programs. This will be the first Sylvia Pride event and will provide an entertaining array of events, such as Dragtopia & Variety Show for all ages on Wednesday, July 10th, raising funds for the Queer Youth Project with Northwest Youth Services, as well as hosting a strong program of educational workshops, speakers, panel discussions, and exhibit.

We invite Exhibiting artists, Performers, Presenters & Class Instructors with a passion for art created with the Queer & Pride theme to become a part of the first Pride event for Sylvia Center for the Arts. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Heart Pounding Studies Class: Layering Authentic Scientific Illustration with the Emotional & Expressive Heart
Let’s study the science behind the function of the human heart, the details of how DaVinci studied an oxen heart & learn how to recreate a sculpture of a heart with clay & beeswax! We’ll also follow the intense curiosity of Leonardo and sketch onto paper, the outside of the heart, the inner chambers of the anatomical heart, with many references and techniques of the Renaissance Art. During this process, we’ll make our own quill pens with feathers, make egg tempera paints with eggs, use dip pens & nibs with ink, use watercolor paints for washes, and even use some fine Sharpies.
Next, the students will get to reveal their inner expressive heart by using a second drawing of the 4 chambers which are representations of different kinds of things that each one of us holds close to our hearts. For example; chamber 1 – Love, chamber 2 – Family, chamber 3 – Art, chamber 4 – Nature. What do you hold close to your heart?

Art Education & More!

I teach art at a few different elementary schools, in the Bellingham School District as an independent contractor (for after school arts enrichment programs), private art lessons, parties/events, museums/galleries, and as a Teaching Artist with Allied Arts of Whatcom County. This non-profit is one that brings the arts to many kids throughout the schools, and I’m so thankful I can be a part of it and this community.

Additionally,  you can find out more about all the fun art events and art classes on my Instagram/Facebook pages Rachel’s Whimsical Art.

Thank you for all your enthusiasm for The Arts and keeping it alive within our community!
