Art Lessons (K-12)

There are a plethora of lesson plans that Miss Simpson has taught to students ranging from elementary, to middle school,
and up to high school. Below, you will find a few written lessons, and below that are the
visual examples of the art projects that were completed in her art classes.

One Word Art Journal Prompts

City of Dreams - Artist Lisa Congdon Inspired

Teacher: Miss Simpson, Year Group/Class/Set: 3rd, 4th 5th grades. No. in class: 10
Date: Monday Oct. 3, 2016 Time of lesson: 1:15 – 3:00 PM
Subject/Lesson focus: Art II/Mono-printing City of Dreams

Context Previous lesson: Colour theory – Colour wheel; primary, secondary, and complimentary colours / Unit: Art I / Visual Art
Previous lesson / Unit context / Student’s prior knowledge: Drawing Nature in Soft Pastels / Dragons in Symmetry

Learning objectives: By using their knowledge of elements of design, & drawing examples, students will incorporate their understanding into mono-printing a cityscape with ink.

Personal objective: To try to create an open communication with all students of varying nationalities/cutures, and to be engaged by asking and answering questions to clarify understanding of the lesson. Make sure to work with each student to see that they are working on the lesson effectively.
Resources Required: Prepared paper, Styrofoam, pencils, erasures, water-soluble markers (ink), rulers, and the prepared demonstration examples to show at beginning of class.

Learning activities (progression/approx timings)
Intro: 5 minutes: Show the class the enlarged printed examples of the City of Dreams cityscape, including the artist inspiration Lisa Congdon. Give my physical mono-print example to show how I drew the buildings in 2-D on paper, the Styrofoam print, and the mono-print with ink. Ask students the difference between a landscape and a cityscape.

Lesson: 10 minutes: I’ll give a demonstration on how to put together a drawing outline, then how to use the Styrofoam to draw/scratch into it to make a print of a cityscape. Give students a choice of using both warm and cool colours in seascape. Ask students what kind of cityscape examples that they liked and why they like it. Give students a choice of the subject matter to include: at least 4 buildings, half are tall, half of them shorter, and varying patterns/repetition. Introduce terms: Mono-print, 2D, cityscape, ink, repetition, & pattern.

5 minutes: Give class the steps to use to create their drawing as a practice one before they do their mono-print on styrofoam. 1.) Draw a sketch of a cityscape using ruler 2.) Include a lines, pattern, & repetition, and a subject matter 3.) Print using mono-print & inks.

Closure:
2:45-2:50 Review the 3 steps that the students need to have to finish this assignment in 2 weeks. . 1.) Draw a sketch of a cityscape using ruler 2.) Include a lines, pattern, & repetition, and a subject matter 3.) Print using mono-print & inks.      Review:   2:50-2:55 Review what students have done with their work thus far. What have students included in their cityscapes. Comment on positives first, then say what needs to be improved.
Clean-Up: 2:55-3:00 Students put away art supplies and drawings onto dry rack/folders.

Enrichment/Extension: The content could be changed by… assigning the students a project to draw a landscape or use nature as a theme instead of a city.

Differentiation / catering for individual needs: Give step-by-step clear instruction with visual aids up on the board for students who may have trouble understanding verbal instructions and have enough visual aids.

Homework: Make a drawing of the cityscape. First, to draw an outline, then use ruler for measurements.
Assessment: Use of a formative assessment by observing their over-all performance working in class on assignment. This is a drawing as a practice before making the mono-print. Give the class questions/answers as a result of the demonstration given at beginning of the class to make a seascape painting.

Screenprinting the Cosmos

Teacher: Rachel Simpson Cooperative; Mrs. Collison
Year Group/Class/Set: Yr. 10 (8th, 9th ,& 10th grades) EC Textiles  No. in class: 15
Date:   Nov. 25, 2013  Time of lesson :   2:35 - 3:30pm
Subject/Lesson focus: Textiles Art: Cosmos – Constellation Screen-printing

Context Previous Lesson: Cosmos Journal – Constellation Stencils for Screen-printing / Unit: Textiles Cosmos / Basic Art
Learning objectives: We are learning to use our constellation stencils to do screen-printing and this will be put into their Cosmos Sketchbook/Journal. I am looking for the students to do the second process of screen-printing onto fabric.

Personal objective: I will slow down my verbal instructions and be clear in the steps to do the screen-printing.
Resources Required: Prepared stencils (stencil paper), sugar paper, print-outs of constellations, computer & printer, board, pencils, rubbers, oil pastels, exact-knives, cutting-mats, ink, screens, squeegees, aprons, and a demonstration example of a stencil.

Learning activities (progression/approx timings)
Intro: 5 minutes: Show class the previous class examples of stencils & screen-printing onto t-shirts. Review the printed handouts of screen-printing & give out new handout with steps to follow for this.

Lesson: 10 minutes: I’ll have the steps written on the board and read them with class. Take their pre-cut stencil and use it to screen-print with the screen, squeegee, and ink – this will be added into their Cosmos sketchbooks. Present demonstration to class on how to make a screen-print.

25 minutes: In class work time. Students will be taping their stencils onto the screen, then use the squeegee and ink to make a print onto fabric.

Closure:
10 minutes: Review the steps of how we make a screen-print onto fabric. Class clean up.

Enrichment/Extension: The content could be changed by… Using a different purpose or end result of the project – to make the stencil and screen-print to make a pattern of the same image over and over again on a continuous fabric or poster/paper.

Differentiation / catering for individual needs: The steps will be written on a board for the entire class and I will give a printed hand-out to the class.
Homework: This project is to be completed in a 2 weeks’ time. It will also be added into their Cosmos Sketchbooks.
Assessment: I’ll give a formative assessment as I was around to each student in which I will assess their work in progress.
