2012 Tulip Festival

Picture
While this winter season has been a mild & warm one for those of us in the pacific north west, the trees have begun to sprout tiny buds, and you can hear frogs croaking in the early mornings. The above photo is from 3 years ago at the Tulip Festival in Skagit county with my honey. I'm looking forward to sunny days ahead filled with color.

Currently, I'm working on several art projects & plans for this spring. I have a painting that I want to finish and add my tea cups to it.  I've got several book boxes, and altered books that I want to get made by the end of March. There are more textile tea cups that I want to make & into another art installation. I have made a new connection to another artist who wants to plan road trips to see other art, museums, and art schools together. (The more, the merrier!)

Additionally, I'm volunteering again with Allied Arts of Whatcom County,  for the upcoming 4th Annual RARE (Recycled Arts, & Reuse Expo), that will be held here in Bellingham, WA on April 3rd & 4th. There will be Art classes/workshops, Presentations, Performances, Music, Art Exhibits, local artists, & all will be hosted in several local downtown business locations during the art walk weekend.  I'll be working on the sponsors, orgainization, planning, contacts/networks, marketing, & helping with the set-up with the amazing Kelly Hart & Katy Tolles.

This means that if YOU want to participate by taking a workshop class, (I will be teaching a recycled art class again), presenting, teaching, selling/buying art, sponsoring (it can be a huge tax break!), enjoying the art walk, putting up your own art booth, then you should contact me asap!

Allied Arts of Whatcom County's Annual RARE

This last week, I finished making 2 new book boxes that were special orders for two dear friends of mine. One is a Lord of the Rings book & the other is a Red Fairy Book. I really enjoyed making both of these on many levels. It was fun to see how just taking the extra time made them look so good.
The next two books that I am currently making are a Mermaid book box, and a Doctor Who TARDIS book box. I'm hoping that more fans will take a look and do special orders for my work. So please do share this with others and let me know what you think. Thanks so much!

A New Year, New Beginnings!

In November, I decided to start an Etsy shop called Rachel's Whimsical Arts, after I had such a great response to my Halloween costume & props that went with it. I had made Jeffrey & I a costume set from the movie Labyrinth. He was David Bowie as Jareth the Goblin King & I was Jennifer Connely's Sarah. Besides having a wonderful time dressed up as my all-time-favorite childhood movies, I also recieved many compliments on my book box prop of the book Laybrinth. So, I made many other book boxes (they can also be a clutch or purpe with strap), based on other books & movies, such as The Neverending Story, Peter Pan, The Princess Bride, Sherlock Holmes, Alice in Wonderland, & Labyrinth. It was fun to make them and get many followers. I have a list of other book boxes that I want to make & have four new ones that are currently under construction.

I've also created a Facebook Group/Fan page and connected it to the Etsy shop here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/RachelsWhimsicalArts
Facebook Page:

And, of course I have my Instagram:

I've had success with one sale, many requests, and over 400 viewers on the Etsy shop. I'm also showing a few of my watercolor mermaid prints & my delicate tea cups. I want to be able to do my art as I enjoy it, and share with others. I hoep to be able to make enough funds to go back into the cost of supplies to be able to make more. This is a way for me to keep being inspired, continue to learn new ways of mixed-media in the arts, and I hope to make enough to put into an art exhibit within the next year.

I am continuing to work towards my art teaching as a substitute teacher within the school district, and have made a few connections within the schools and classes I've taught. I have also worked with an art school arts program through Gabriel's Art Kids in November. Allied Arts of Whatcom county is also going to have their Annual RARE show the weekend of April 3rd & I am planning on joining the list of recycled art workshops to teach a class. All of this adds up to new things yet to come for the new year bursting with creativity & I'm looking forward to all of it!

I hope that friends and family will share the news with others and come to enjoy my art in any way that they can. I just love to share it, teach it, and enjoy the learning process. The more the merrier!
